St Martin de Porres Catholic Primary School

Year 6

Welcome to Year 6

Year 6 is a special and memorable year as children complete their journey through Key Stage 2 and prepare for the transition to secondary school. It is a year of challenge, responsibility, and growth - academically, socially, and spiritually. We encourage independence, resilience, and leadership, helping every child to feel confident and ready for the next stage of their education.

In Year 6, children consolidate and extend their skills in reading, writing, and mathematics through stimulating lessons and real-life problem-solving. They enjoy guided reading of challenging texts, extended writing projects, and advanced maths investigations. Our curriculum also includes exciting topics in science, history, and geography, encouraging critical thinking and creativity.

Our curriculum includes:

  • Science investigations such as studying electricity, light, and evolution.
  • History projects exploring World War II and its impact.
  • Geography studies focusing on global issues, sustainability, and map skills.
  • Art and design including detailed sketching, painting, and mixed media.
  • Music lessons to develop performance and appreciation.
  • PE sessions promoting fitness, teamwork, and confidence.
  • Outdoor learning and opportunities to connect with nature.

We enrich learning through topic-based projects, themed days, and educational visits that builds independence and teamwork.

Living Our Catholic Faith

Faith is at the heart of Year 6. We begin and end each day with prayer and encourage children to live out Gospel values such as kindness, respect, and forgiveness. In Religious Education, children reflect deeply on Scripture, explore Catholic Social Teaching, and learn how to live as disciples of Christ in today’s world. We celebrate the liturgical seasons, take part in school Masses, and join in special events such as Advent, Lent, and feast days. Year 6 also focuses on leadership and service, preparing children to be role models and ambassadors of faith as they move on to secondary school.

A Message from the Year 6 Teacher

“Welcome to Year 6! This is a year of exciting opportunities, new responsibilities, and spiritual growth. We encourage every child to be confident, curious, and compassionate, while living out Gospel values in all they do. We look forward to working together to make this a happy and successful year for your child.”

How Parents Can Support at Home

Your support is invaluable! Here are some ways to help your child thrive:

  • Read and discuss challenging texts – encourage opinions and debate.
  • Practice spelling, grammar, and maths skills – short, focused sessions work best.
  • Encourage independence – let your child take responsibility for homework and organisation.
  • Explore current events together – talk about issues and link them to faith and values.
  • Celebrate effort and progress – praise perseverance and resilience.
  • Share faith at home – pray together, talk about Gospel values, and discuss what your child learns in RE.

Together, we can make Year 6 a joyful, faith-filled, and successful experience for every child.
