Year 2
Welcome to Year 2
Year 2 is an exciting and rewarding year as children continue their journey through Key Stage 1. Building on the foundations of Year 1, we help pupils grow in confidence, independence, and curiosity. This year, children deepen their understanding of core subjects while exploring new ideas and developing a love of learning.
We focus on strengthening skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, using engaging lessons and practical activities. Children enjoy guided reading sessions, creative writing projects, and problem-solving challenges in maths. We also encourage teamwork and resilience as they prepare for the transition to Key Stage 2.
Our curriculum includes:
- Science investigations such as studying habitats and learning about plants and animals.
- History and geography projects exploring significant people, places, and events.
- Art and design activities including painting, collage, and model-making.
- Music and singing to develop rhythm and creativity.
- PE lessons promoting fitness, coordination, and teamwork.
- Outdoor learning and opportunities to connect with nature.
We enrich learning through topic-based projects, themed days, and educational visits that bring subjects to life.
Living Our Catholic Faith
Faith is central to life in Year 2. We begin and end each day with prayer and encourage children to live out Gospel values such as kindness, respect, and forgiveness. In Religious Education, children learn more about Jesus’ teachings, explore Bible stories, and understand the importance of prayer and worship. We celebrate the liturgical seasons of the Church, take part in school Masses, and join in special events such as Advent, Lent, and feast days. Through these experiences, children grow spiritually and learn to care for others as part of God’s family.
A Message from the Year 2 Teacher
“Welcome to Year 2! This year is full of exciting opportunities to learn, grow, and deepen our faith. We encourage every child to be curious, creative, and confident, while living out Gospel values in all they do. We look forward to working together to make this a happy and successful year for your child.”
How Parents Can Support at Home
Your support is invaluable! Here are some ways to help your child thrive:
- Read together daily – discuss stories and ask questions.
- Practice spelling and number facts – short, fun sessions work best.
- Encourage writing at home – letters, stories, or diaries.
- Explore the world together – notice nature, talk about places and events.
- Celebrate effort and progress – praise perseverance and curiosity.
- Share faith at home – pray together, talk about Gospel values, and discuss what your child learns in RE.
Together, we can make Year 2 a joyful and faith-filled experience for every child.
