St Martin de Porres Catholic Primary School

Spanish

Intent

Our intent is to provide pupils with a high-quality Spanish language education, a Modern Foreign Language (MFL) that develops communication skills, cultural awareness, and a love of languages, while reflecting the values of our Catholic faith.

We aim to:

  • Introduce pupils to basic vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation in an engaging and age-appropriate way.
  • Foster an appreciation of Spanish-speaking cultures, traditions, and values, promoting global citizenship and respect for diversity.
  • Build pupils’ confidence in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish through interactive and practical activities.
  • Encourage curiosity and enthusiasm for learning languages, while deepening pupils’ understanding of the Catholic faith through prayers, hymns, and traditions in Spanish.

Implementation

We implement our vision through a structured and progressive curriculum enriched by Catholic values and cultural experiences:

  • Weekly Spanish lessons for all pupils, delivered by a specialist native Spanish teacher, Señora Dormi, who brings authentic language expertise and cultural knowledge to every lesson.
  • A spiral approach that revisits key vocabulary and structures while introducing new topics such as greetings, numbers, colors, family, food, and everyday phrases.
  • Faith integration: pupils learn common Catholic liturgical responses in Spanish, supporting participation in school and parish celebrations.
  • Interactive learning methods: songs, games, role-play, storytelling, and digital resources to make language learning fun and memorable.
  • Integration of cultural experiences, including Spanish festivals, music, art, and food, as well as exploring Catholic traditions in Spanish-speaking countries.
  • Opportunities for oral practice and performance, such as class presentations, dialogues, and assemblies, including prayer recitals and hymns.
  • Use of technology and apps to support pronunciation, vocabulary building, and interactive exercises.
  • Differentiated activities to ensure inclusivity and accessibility for all learners, including those with SEND.

Impact

The impact of our Spanish curriculum is evident in pupils’ linguistic, cultural, and spiritual development:

  • Pupils develop basic conversational skills and can understand and use common Spanish phrases.
  • They demonstrate confidence in speaking and listening, supported by accurate pronunciation and intonation.
  • Pupils can recite simple Catholic prayers in Spanish, deepening their understanding of faith and worship.
  • Assessment shows pupils make strong progress in vocabulary acquisition and sentence building.
  • Pupils gain an appreciation of Spanish-speaking cultures and Catholic traditions, fostering respect and curiosity about the wider world.
  • They leave primary school with a positive attitude towards language learning and faith, ready to build on these foundations in secondary education.
