Year 5
Welcome to Year 5
Year 5 is an exciting stage in Key Stage 2, where children take on greater responsibility for their learning and begin preparing for the transition to Year 6. This year is all about building confidence, independence, and resilience while continuing to develop a love of learning.
In Year 5, children deepen their understanding of reading, writing, and mathematics through challenging and engaging lessons. They enjoy guided reading sessions, extended writing projects, and problem-solving activities in maths. We also introduce new topics in science, history, and geography, encouraging critical thinking and creativity.
Our curriculum includes:
- Science investigations such as studying forces, Earth and space, and properties of materials.
- History projects exploring the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings.
- Geography studies focusing on climate, biomes, and world regions.
- Art and design including sketching, painting, and mixed media.
- Music lessons to develop rhythm and performance skills.
- PE sessions promoting fitness, teamwork, and confidence.
- Outdoor learning and opportunities to connect with nature.
We enrich learning through topic-based projects, themed days, and educational visits that bring subjects to life.
Living Our Catholic Faith
Faith is central to life in Year 5. We begin and end each day with prayer and encourage children to live out Gospel values such as kindness, respect, and forgiveness. In Religious Education, children explore the Sacraments in greater depth, learn about the lives of saints, and reflect on how we can follow Jesus’ example in our daily lives. We celebrate the liturgical seasons, take part in school Masses, and join in special events such as Advent, Lent, and feast days. Year 5 also focuses on social justice and charity, encouraging children to think about how they can make a positive difference in the world.
A Message from the Year 5 Teacher
“Welcome to Year 5! This year is full of exciting opportunities to learn, grow, and deepen our faith. We encourage every child to be curious, creative, and confident, while living out Gospel values in all they do. We look forward to working together to make this a happy and successful year for your child.”
How Parents Can Support at Home
Your support is invaluable! Here are some ways to help your child thrive:
- Read together regularly – discuss stories and ask questions.
- Practice spelling and times tables – short, fun sessions work best.
- Encourage writing at home – letters, stories, or diaries.
- Explore the world together – notice nature, talk about places and events.
- Celebrate effort and progress – praise perseverance and curiosity.
- Share faith at home – pray together, talk about Gospel values, and discuss what your child learns in RE.
Together, we can make Year 5 a joyful and faith-filled experience for every child.
