St Martin de Porres Catholic Primary School

Year 3

Welcome to Year 3

Year 3 marks an important milestone as children begin their journey into Key Stage 2. This year is full of new challenges and exciting opportunities to grow academically, socially, and spiritually. We encourage independence, responsibility, and a love of learning as children build on the strong foundations of Key Stage 1.

In Year 3, children develop their skills in reading, writing, and mathematics through engaging lessons and practical activities. They enjoy guided reading sessions, creative writing projects, and problem-solving challenges in maths. We also introduce new topics in science, history, and geography, sparking curiosity and critical thinking.

Our curriculum includes:

  • Science investigations such as studying rocks, light, and forces.
  • History projects exploring ancient civilizations like the Egyptians.
  • Geography studies focusing on maps, countries, and physical features.
  • Art and design including sketching, painting, and sculpture.
  • Music lessons to develop rhythm and creativity.
  • PE sessions promoting fitness, teamwork, and confidence.
  • Outdoor learning and opportunities to connect with nature.

We enrich learning through topic-based projects, themed days, and educational visits that bring subjects to life.

Living Our Catholic Faith

Faith continues to guide everything we do in Year 3. We begin and end each day with prayer and encourage children to live out Gospel values such as kindness, respect, and forgiveness. In Religious Education, children deepen their understanding of the Sacraments, learn about the lives of saints, and explore how we can follow Jesus’ example in our daily lives. We celebrate the liturgical seasons, take part in school Masses, and join in special events such as Advent, Lent, and feast days. Year 3 is also a special year for many children as they prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, supported by school and parish.

A Message from the Year 3 Teacher

“Welcome to Year 3! This year is full of exciting opportunities to learn, grow, and deepen our faith. We encourage every child to be curious, creative, and confident, while living out Gospel values in all they do. We look forward to working together to make this a happy and successful year for your child.”

How Parents Can Support at Home

Your support is invaluable! Here are some ways to help your child thrive:

  • Read together regularly – discuss stories and ask questions.
  • Practice spelling and times tables – short, fun sessions work best.
  • Encourage writing at home – letters, stories, or diaries.
  • Explore the world together – notice nature, talk about places and events.
  • Celebrate effort and progress – praise perseverance and curiosity.
  • Share faith at home – pray together, talk about Gospel values, and discuss what your child learns in RE.

Together, we can make Year 3 a joyful and faith-filled experience for every child.
