Reception
Welcome to Reception
Reception is the beginning of an exciting learning journey! In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), we focus on creating a warm, nurturing environment where children feel safe, happy, and ready to explore. Our aim is to develop confidence, independence, and a love of learning through play-based activities and meaningful experiences.
Children learn through a balance of adult-led activities and child-initiated play, covering the seven areas of learning:
- Communication and Language – developing speaking and listening skills.
- Physical Development – building coordination and confidence through movement.
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development – learning to share, take turns, and build friendships.
- Literacy – introducing phonics and early reading and writing skills.
- Mathematics – exploring numbers, shapes, and patterns through practical activities.
- Understanding the World – discovering nature, technology, and different cultures.
- Expressive Arts and Design – encouraging creativity through art, music, and role play.
Our outdoor area provides opportunities for exploration, problem-solving, and imaginative play, helping children develop physically and socially.
Living Our Catholic Faith
Faith is at the heart of Reception. We begin and end each day with prayer and encourage children to live out Gospel values such as kindness, respect, and forgiveness. Through Religious Education, children learn simple prayers, hear Bible stories, and discover that they are part of God’s family. We celebrate the liturgical seasons, take part in school Masses, and join in special events such as Advent and Lent. Children also learn about caring for others and the world around them as part of their spiritual development.
A Message from the Reception Teacher
“Welcome to Reception! We are so excited to begin this wonderful journey with your child. Our classroom is a place of joy, discovery, and faith, where every child is valued and encouraged to grow. We look forward to working together to make this a happy and successful start to school life.”
How Parents Can Support at Home
Your involvement makes a big difference! Here are some simple ways to support your child:
- Read together daily – share stories and talk about pictures.
- Practice simple counting and letter sounds – make it fun and playful.
- Encourage independence – let your child dress themselves and tidy up.
- Talk about the world around you – notice nature and discuss what you see.
- Celebrate effort and progress – praise curiosity and perseverance.
- Share faith at home – pray together, talk about God’s love, and discuss what your child learns in RE.
- See our Phonics page for more ideas how to help!
Together, we can make Reception a joyful and faith-filled experience for every child.
